Lifetime is finite. The time you have runs into different canisters. These canisters are constructed very differently for everyone. There is also the waste tap (some people call it the netflix tap), where the time passes in the sand.
While the sand is falling, it turns a generator that powers a light bulb. When the sand stops flowing, the light turns off.
